Hand-washing

Safe hand-washing practices are the best way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and transmission of germs.  Washing hands with soap and water and drying hands effectively decreases the amount of germs that can be passed on to others.  Children learn to wash hands effectively through explicit instruction, games and play experiences.  Staff wash hands and children (where possible) before and after meals, after using the toilet, after outside/messy play, after wiping noses or after coming into contact with bodily fluids.

Young children need continuous supervision to ensure they develop good hygiene practices.  Through regular observations, staff can assist and support each child with effective hand-washing techniques.  Children are encouraged to wash hands at numerous times throughout the day in particular, before eating or drinking or after using the toilet.  If your child suffers from sensitivities or allergies as a result of using general soap, please discuss this with your child’s teacher.  You may be asked to supply an alternate cleanser to soap for your child to use.

Sun Safety

At Head Start we are committed to ensuring all staff and children maintain a healthy Ultra Violet (UV) exposure balance and are suitably protected when exposed to the sun. Staff model and promote sun protection measures.  Children learn about appropriate sun safety and are encouraged to wear hats and suitable clothing in outdoor environments.  To ensure your child is suitably protected from the sun, please provide your child with:

  • Sunscreen.  Please apply sunscreen to your child prior to coming to Head Start each day.  With your permission, staff will re-apply sunscreen to your child during the day as required.

  • Sun-safe clothing.  Please send your child in clothing that covers the shoulders and arms.  For example, singlet shirts and shoe-string dresses are NOT suitable in the hotter months as they do not provide adequate sun protection.

  • A sun-safe hat.  For hats to provide effective protection from the sun they need to protect your child’s face, neck and ears.  A legionnaire, broad-brimmed or bucket hat is suitable.  Baseball caps DO NOT have broad-brims or cover your child’s neck so do not provide sufficient protection.  Caps are NOT suitable for outdoor play.

  • If your child has known skin allergies to certain sunscreens, we ask you provide a sunscreen that is suitable for your child.  This will be for the use of your child only.  Please discuss this with your child’s teacher during your child’s enrolment interview.

In the hotter months of the year (Term 1 and Term 4), our children will enjoy outdoor play experiences in the cooler part of the day (ie. prior to 10.00am).
